Dysprosium is a Rare Earth Metal classified in the group of Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE).
In 1886, the discoverer of the Gallium, Lecoq de Boisbaudran succeeds another stroke of genius, the isolate dysprosium oxide of a holmium oxide sample – were previously thought to be homogeneous substance. The name comes from Greek and means “inaccessible”, which describes perfectly.
Characteristics
This silver-gray heavy metal is both flexible and scalable. Itis very impure and thus highly reactive. Indeed, it is oxidizable to the open air, in contact with water; it dissolves in a fine acidity.
Properties & Applications
As neodymium, dysprosium has highly magnetic properties. Dysprosium is also part of the permanent magnet components, which are used in generators for producing electricity and electric cars.

Because of its significant role due to its resistance to heat, for permanent magnets, the Dysprosium belongs to the most important Rare Earths. Application field
- Aeronautics: Dysprosium is added to magnesium alloys that are used in aeronautics. It increases the hardness of the material and facilitates its transformation
- Magneto-Optical Discs: in mini-discs are used as recording material alloy of a ferromagnetic metal (iron, cobalt, nickel) with Rare Earths (Terbium, Dysprosium and Gadolinium)
